In your best New Joisey accent… some furking assholes are comin’ a town and they’re taking up Gene’s Po Boys old place!

At first we read it Pork and Ice Hole and were like, WTF is a Pork and Ice Hole? Poke an asshole? Wait, so confused? Ohhh! Fork and Ice Hole! Oh wait again! Sooo clever those kids! Anyone know what the deal is with this joint?

I’m not sure whose behind it but its a real bummer. If you want to protest it I’ve included
the TABC website: http://www.tabc.state.tx.us and, on the top of the right side of their home page you will see “I want to…”. The 5th choice from the bottom is “Protest an application for a permit”. Click on that and the rest is easy.
As far as I understand you can only protest the late night hours application, but maybe if they don’t get that the F**cking A**ssholes won’t move in.
This guy has a commercial demo for it on his website:
http://voice123.com/shanewells
Oh man, we were trying to give them the benefit of the doubt, but that commercial might have just sent us on over to the TABC site… I don’t know… thoughts?
And, good find, Tom!
Thanks, Alex, too! EA Commenters of the Day Awards to both of you!
The douchebags are coming! The douchebags are coming!
my friend tim is opening up this place. he is a really awesome guy. his wife and him owned method hair until recently, and this is his new venture. shane wells is a good friend of their’s that used to live here and is now based between here and la. i could keep going, but he’s no douchebag and he has great plans for the space. and he is going to change the name to something else, because the community wasn’t a fan. also, they are east side dwellers, just like us. give him a break, guys!
Honestly.. a name is just a name. The more places to get something to eat or drink around this side of town the better.
Avan – Can your friend Tim maybe throw up a website or something so we in the hood have some idea of what’s going on there? Rumors run wild, only the truth will set people straight on what is happening with that spot. Seriously, my neighborhood listserv went nuts over the name. Maybe post some info here?
Aw the Fork ‘n’ Icehole was a great name!
Making assumptions based solely on a name. Hmmmm, reminds me of a certain Presidential election. C’mon folks, we can do better than that
Personally I was fine with the name, location, booze, live music?, open late, etc. But when I heard that radio spot…….damn if it wasn’t just the douchiest radio commercial I’ve ever heard. Maybe it was a joke……..seems that spot has been removed. Jokes on us!
Just spoke to Tim the owner of The Fork and he said that the spot was something the announcer used for his personal resume but that it was never intended to be heard by anyone else. It was not Tim’s idea.
He has responded but I am going to post a new blog post that includes his thoughts on the matter. Should be up in a couple of hours.

Excited to have you in the hood! As for names, “The Fork” gets my vote. Looking forward to visiting!
Hey there Tim! I am excited to see what you are doing. I am somewhat of a veg…and would love to be able to take friends out to a burger joint…if I could eat something there too other then just fries…and its cool that you are clued in on the vegan and veg thing! If you are conscience of vegan then I am sure you will have somethings with cheese too. I have to agree with the name though…grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr…the fork…yeah…the fork in the road…or sumthing to do with eastside fork…yeah!
Sorry Tim to be so blunt in this response…but the full name just sounds soooooo much like a couple of frat boys getting together, while playing beer pong for an extended amount of time…threw around some play on word games that got a little bit out of hand after a few ten many beers….and then everyone laughed so hard they dropped and passed out….only to wake up in the morning thinking… “DUDE did we deam that or did we really think that up?
Regarding the name: Coming from an old punk rocker who, one who is a true believer in shock value…well eventually that fades. We (residents of the revitalization district homeowners) have put so much effort into this neighborhood and I have personally faught “the Man developers” for 12 years now. You have a great idea. I respect you for the salon you just sold. It was really nice…so I do not question your judgement as a business venture.
I am a rebel dottie…a loner…but oh Please change the last part of the name. Even I, who lived many moons in shock land would be not happy to see the sign every time I drove by…or better yet even having to say the name out loud…or explain it to those visiting after bragging about what a cool neighborhood I live.
When I originally read that name…I read it over and over…it really just made me shake my head and wonder WTF? Really! I wondered to myself what exactly this establishment would bring to the hood. Thugs, Drugs? Perhaps another chain drive I thought? Yet coming from someone who has some advertising and promotion experience…YOU have some cahoneys to put it out there…and if anything you got everyone talking about it…and perhaps that was the plan to begin with? Brilliant marketing…even if you didnt mean it! You sure opened some peoples eyes and a can of worms on the name, and got their blood pumping.
Dont be mad at the analogies…its just the impression I get from the name. I will dine and hang at your establishment around pay days. We need to stick together and support each other. If the food is reasonably priced…I will be there. I could/cannot really afford to go to other local restaraunts because they are so costly…so if things are reasonably priced, I will be there and bring friends. If there is local music, I will come to that too. You actually have parking at this location! That is a plus!!!
I have been to your salon and found it very tastfully decorated…the magazines were cool too. I have no problem with you coming over here and opening up a restaraunt./bar in the hood, from what I have seen of your past business.
So regardless of the “Plan” of the name…you have caused such a buzz with the controversial name…that you just got tons of free advertising…and everyone in the neighborhood knows about your establishment even before you got your permits…congrats on that!
No hard feelings! Hey why not just drop the last part…and if it means so much to you…print it on some drink napkins for the bar…and let the drunks scratch their heads.
Good luck with whatever name you use…and if you keep the drunken teen game name…I will just tell my friends, “hey you guys want to go get a beer/burger/veggie burger down the street?”….and I wont look up at the sign…and will not say the name.

My wife and I spotted the TABC placard in the window of Gene’s old place and assumed the name was a placeholder. Who knows? Perhaps, we thought, the owners were tweaked at the bureaucracy and were sticking to the forkin’ iceholes downtown. “Icehouse” is the more common term for a South Texas open-front convenience store, a term that has been extended to taverns and grills. Maybe that is what was intended?
I’ve read Tim’s reply to the concerns raised here and am relieved to hear of his plans for the place. I miss Gene and his smothered catfish po’boys. To have another modest eatery fill the gap is most welcome.
As for suggestions for the name, I like “The Fork”. The building is situated at the fork of East Eleventh and Rosewood. I’d also put in a plug for an historical connection. Our neighborhood was originally settled by freedmen who developed a community they named Gregorytown. Blackshear Elementary was formerly Gregorytown School. “The Fork at Gregorytown” sounds a tad pretentious.”Gregory Fork” or even “Greg’s Fork” is more manageable. In any event, just stick a fork in it and call it done.

You people are a fucking joke. This man is trying to help make your neighborhood a better place to live. Why don’t you just tear the place down and put in another Walgreen’s?
I’m convinced that if any of these people ever met Tim, they would be super excited to have his business in their hood, regardless of the name. He’s tied in with a lot of genuinely great up-and-coming musicians and artists around town and is sure to have a great band line up as well as good food.
The name is great Tim. Don’t listen to the haters! Most will change their minds when they hear others judging your establishment on it’s substance rather than a name.
The name is lame (clever word play, but after an initial chuckle bombs as a restaurant name). The important thing for those of us who live very nearby is that Tim forget about the late hours permit. There are 10 houses on the same block as “The Fork”, some right on the alley that goes to and from the parking lot. That’s no place to have traffic, let alone potentially beer-soaked traffic, between midnight and 2:00 am. Brink on the burgers and beer, but close it down at 11:00 (or legally midnight) with a regular beer and wine permit. We want to welcome Tim and whatever he ends up calling the place. Be a good neighbor and drop the late hours request.
Just super excited to have another East Side restaurant/bar w/in walking distance! Thrilled to hear they’re going to spotlight the historical integrity of the building. I’m a big fan of the the Hillside Icehouse as a name….or Hillside Fork.
Maybe they’ll even show games?? We definitely need a sports bar type venue on the East Side.
Don’t get discouraged, Tim! This East-Sider is cheering you on!
I was born and raised in East Austin and my husbands family owns the old Hillside Drugstore. Vegan pizzas will not add to the so called “vibe” of the neighborhood. The native residents are being run out and displaced in order for the “new” residents to totally change the area.
